Knee Stiffness vs Knee Locking: What's the Difference?
They may sound similar, but stiffness and true locking are two different knee symptoms.
Stiffness or Locking?
Stiffness
The knee feels tight, difficult or uncomfortable to move, but movement is usually still possible.
Locking
The knee may suddenly become stuck and fail to move normally through part of its range.
Knee Stiffness Often Feels Like…
Stiffness is common with conditions such as osteoarthritis, especially after periods of inactivity.
Knee Locking Is Different
With true locking, the knee can feel physically blocked and may not fully straighten or bend normally.
A meniscus tear or a loose piece of cartilage can sometimes cause mechanical locking.
Look for These Differences
Why Can This Happen?
Knee stiffness can occur with arthritis, swelling, injury or reduced mobility. Knee locking can have mechanical causes, including some meniscus or cartilage problems.
Symptoms alone cannot establish the exact diagnosis.
Don't Ignore a Knee That Repeatedly Locks
If your knee repeatedly catches or locks, cannot fully straighten, gives way, becomes significantly swollen, or interferes with normal walking, arrange a medical evaluation.
Stiff ≠ Locked
If your knee simply feels tight after sitting or resting, that is different from a knee that becomes mechanically stuck.
Persistent symptoms should be assessed rather than diagnosed from an online symptom description.
