Does your knee feel tight?

Common experiences can include:

✓ Difficulty getting moving after sitting

✓ A tight or uncomfortable feeling

✓ Reduced flexibility

✓ Movement that improves as the joint loosens

Stiffness can occur with several knee problems, including arthritis and swelling. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause.

🔒

Does your knee suddenly catch?

True locking can feel like the knee cannot fully bend or straighten because movement is suddenly blocked.

A meniscus problem is one possible cause of catching or locking. Other mechanical problems can also produce similar symptoms.

Stiffness or locking?

STIFFNESS

→ Tightness
→ Reduced flexibility
→ Often noticeable after inactivity
→ Movement may remain possible

LOCKING

→ Sudden catching
→ Knee feels blocked
→ Difficulty fully bending or straightening
→ May occur with pain, swelling or giving-way

05 — Why Locking Matters
6 / 9

Don't ignore repeated locking.

A torn meniscus can sometimes cause a feeling that the knee is locked in place or make it difficult to fully straighten the knee.

A piece of torn meniscus may interfere with normal knee movement.

If your knee repeatedly catches or locks and normal bending or straightening is affected, arrange a medical evaluation.

⚠ The knee repeatedly locks or catches

⚠ Significant swelling develops

⚠ You cannot bear weight normally

⚠ Severe pain follows an injury

⚠ The knee is hot/red, especially with fever

07 — What Not to Do

Don't force a locked knee.

If movement is suddenly blocked, avoid repeatedly forcing the knee through painful resistance.

Reduce activities that aggravate the symptoms until you can get appropriate medical advice.
