Postpartum Hair Shedding Timeline
When Does Postpartum Shedding Finally Stop?
You're not going bald — you're on a hormonal timeline. Here's exactly what happens month by month, and when your hair comes back.
Your Hormones Held Your Hair In
In pregnancy, high estrogen keeps hair stuck in the growth phase. After birth, estrogen crashes overnight — and hundreds of strands enter the shedding phase at once.
Month by Month
Shedding usually kicks in around 3 months postpartum, peaks between 4 and 6 months, then slows as regrowth begins.
It Stops by 6–12 Months
For most women, shedding tapers off before baby's first birthday. Density usually returns to normal by 12–15 months — sometimes sooner.
Still Shedding After 12 Months?
That's no longer postpartum shedding. Ask your doctor to check thyroid, iron, ferritin and vitamin D — plus PCOS. These are fixable, but they need to be found.
