“Mommy Brain” Isn’t a Joke. It’s a Rewiring.
You walk into the nursery and can’t remember why. You put the milk in the cupboard. You can’t find the word “stroller” — so you point.
It’s not permanent. But it’s also not just sleep deprivation. Real brain changes are happening — and one piece of the puzzle almost never gets mentioned.
Pregnancy Prunes Your Brain (On Purpose)
A landmark study in Nature Neuroscience (Hoekzema et al.) scanned women before and after pregnancy. They found measurable gray matter reduction in regions tied to social cognition — changes that lasted at least two years.
The finding wasn’t damage. It was pruning — the brain refining itself to bond with and protect a baby. But the same shift touches the hippocampus, your memory center.
Studies consistently show working memory and verbal recall dip during the third trimester — and often linger well into the postpartum months.
Your Body Shunts Minerals to the Baby
During pregnancy, your body prioritizes the fetus. Calcium, iron, magnesium — and lithium — all cross the placenta and get transferred to your baby first, you second.
Lithium also passes into breast milk. So the drain doesn’t stop at birth — breastfeeding continues the transfer for months or years.
Modern soil is already up to 90% depleted in lithium — so your starting pool is low before pregnancy pulls from it. Research on postpartum depression has linked low lithium availability to exactly this pattern.
Lithium Supports the Postpartum Brain
Lithium is a natural inhibitor of GSK-3β — the enzyme that runs hot during inflammation, sleep loss, and hormonal shifts. It also supports BDNF, the growth factor that helps neurons rebuild after pregnancy’s pruning phase.
Harvard researchers, publishing in Nature, showed that lithium deficiency may be a key trigger of Alzheimer’s pathology — and that restoring it with lithium orotate reversed the damage and restored memory in aged mice.
The research form, lithium orotate, crosses the blood–brain barrier at nutritional doses (typically 1–10 mg) — far below prescription lithium carbonate.
How Has Your Memory Changed?
Answer honestly. Pregnancy brain is normal — but the degree matters.
Always consult your doctor before adding any supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
