Tight Hamstrings Causing Lower Knee Pain?

That pulling sensation behind or below the knee may feel worse when your hamstrings are tight. A gentle stretching routine can be a useful starting point for improving flexibility.

FIRST, UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTION

Why Can Tight Hamstrings Affect the Knee?

The hamstrings cross the back of the thigh and influence movement at both the hip and knee. When they are tight, certain movements may feel restricted or uncomfortable.

But tight hamstrings are not the only possible explanation for pain around the knee.

STRETCH #1
↕

Gentle Lying Hamstring Stretch

Lie on your back with one knee bent. Bring the other leg upward and gently straighten it until you feel a comfortable stretch along the back of your thigh.

Keep your hands behind the thigh rather than pulling directly on the knee joint.

STRETCH #2

Seated Hamstring Stretch

Sit near the edge of a sturdy chair. Extend one leg forward with the heel supported and gently hinge forward from your hips until you feel a mild stretch.

Back Straight Avoid rounding aggressively.
Gentle Stretch without forcing the knee.
Breathe Keep breathing normally.
STRETCH #3

Calf Stretch Against a Wall

Stand facing a wall and place one foot behind you. Keep the rear heel down and gently bend the front knee. You should feel a stretch through the calf.

Heel Down Keep the rear heel comfortably on the floor.
Slow Ease into the stretch gradually.
No Bouncing Use a steady controlled position.
A SIMPLE ROUTINE

Try This Gentle Sequence

1
Warm up
Walk gently for a few minutes.
2
Hamstring stretch
Use a comfortable, controlled stretch.
3
Calf stretch
Hold a gentle position without bouncing.
4
Finish
Move the knee gently through its comfortable range.
IMPORTANT

Stretching Should Not Feel Like a Test of Pain

A mild pulling sensation can occur during stretching, but sharp, intense or worsening knee pain is a reason to stop. Do not force the knee into a deeper stretch.

Stop If pain becomes sharp or severe.
Modify Reduce the range if uncomfortable.
Get Help If symptoms persist or worsen.
WHEN TO GET MEDICAL ADVICE

Lower Knee Pain Needs More Than Stretching If…

Pain continues despite modifying activity, repeatedly limits walking, or occurs with significant swelling, locking, giving way or difficulty bearing weight.

A clinician or physical therapist can help determine whether the hamstrings are actually contributing to the symptoms.
