Why Does My Inner Knee Feel Like It's Snapping?
That sudden “snap,” click or catching sensation can be unsettling.
Swipe to understand what may be happening inside or around the knee.
Feel a sudden “click”?
A snapping sensation can happen when tissues move during bending or straightening.
What could cause the snap?
When the snap is on the inner side...
The inner knee contains structures including the medial meniscus and medial collateral ligament, along with tendons and other tissues.
The location of the sensation can provide a clue, but it cannot identify the cause by itself.
A painless snap is different.
If there is NO pain, swelling or instability:
A popping or snapping sound by itself may not indicate a serious problem.
But if the snap is painful:
Painful snapping or catching can be associated with problems involving soft tissues or the meniscus.
Mayo Clinic notes that knee popping can occur for several reasons, while painful snapping/catching deserves evaluation.
When should you worry?
⚠ Sudden snap during an injury
⚠ Rapid swelling afterward
⚠ Knee feels unstable or gives way
⚠ Knee locks or catches
⚠ You cannot fully straighten it
⚠ You cannot put normal weight on it
Snap + pain + swelling?
That combination deserves more attention than an occasional painless click.
Don't keep testing the snap.
If a particular movement repeatedly produces painful snapping, stop repeatedly provoking it.
Avoid activities that clearly worsen the symptoms until the knee has been assessed if symptoms persist or are significant.
